The Kibana UI isn't super intuitive about exporting dashboards - you'll need to find the saved object list and select the dashboard to export.
Remember dashboards are composed of visualizations over the data in index patterns - which are other objects - so be sure to export those too.
When you've saved your dashboard file, you can reset the data store - remember Kibana stores state in an Elasticsearch index.
